On Dec. 8, 2011 the three-day International Conference on Human Resources Development for the Transmission of Traditional Skills: National Approaches and their Application to Stone and Brick was concluded successfully. It is jointly organized by Agency for Cultural Affairs, Japan (Bunkacho); the Asia-Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO; the National Institutes for Cultural Heritage, National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, Nara and Tokyo; WHITRAP Shanghai; Tongji University; and Shanghai Tongji Urban Planning & Design Institute in cooperation with the JAPAN ICOMOS National Committee, the Japanese Association for Conservation of Architectural Monuments (JACAM).

About 30 professionals, from the Asia-Pacific countries like China, Japan, Philippines, Indonesia, Korea, Sri Lanka, India, attended the conference. Keynote speech and heated discussion on “Nature of Cultural Heritage in Stone and Brick”, “Threats to Traditional Skills in Stone and Brick”, “Principles of Conservation, repair and restoration” and “Recommendation for Regeneration and Transmission of Traditional Skills in Stone and Brick” were devoted. During the session, participants had a field study to some typical stone and brick buildings, such as Yifeng Bank, the Bund 18, Sinan Mansion and Yongquanfang. Because architecture in the Asia-Pacific region has much in common, after dedicated presentation by technical experts, participants were aroused extensive and similar concerns in restoration and challenges.
