Mr. Ruan received the Outstanding Achievement Award for Heritage Conservation in the Asia-Pacific Region in 2003, making him the first person from the circle of architecture in China that is rewarded with this exceptional honor. In 2005, Mr. RUAN Yisan received the same honor for his contribution to the Preservation of the Pinjiang Historic District in Suzhou. Mr. Ruan is honored as the defender of urban context and historic cities as well as the watchmen of the ancient cities. The conservation planning, in ancient towns Zhouzhuang, Tongli,Luzhi, Wuzhen, Xitang and Nanxun in the Yangtze River Delta, hosted by Mr. Ruan is regarded as the milestone in ancient town conservation in China.

The efforts of Mr. Ruan saved the ancient city of Pinyao from destruction and it is now listed as a world heritage site.
