The International Day for Monuments and Sites was created on 18th April, 1982, by International Council on Monuments and Sites(ICOMOS) and adopted in 1983, at the 22nd UNESCO General Conference. Since then, 18th of April is taken as a special day offering an opportunity to raise public awareness concerning the world’s heritage. On this day many conferences, symposium, activities are organized in order to draw attention and interest in this field. Each year, the Scientific Council of ICOMOS selects one topic to carry out discussions. In 2007 the chosen theme was “Cultural Landscapes and Monuments of Nature”, and in 2008 was “Religious Heritage and Sacred Places”. This year, 2009, has been declared by the United Nations as the International Year of Astronomy. Therefore, ICOMOS has decided to devote the International Day for Monuments and Sites of 2009 to the theme of “Heritage and Science”. It tries to understand the relationship between heritage conservation and science development: how the different kinds of technology and techniques have had an impact on climate change and cultural heritage.
