Background

Since its establishment, WHITR-AP Suzhou has been committed to fulfilling the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, systematically carrying out capacity building for heritage conservation in the Asia-Pacific region. It has consecutively organized 16 sessions of the "Advanced Course on Conservation and Restoration Techniques of Traditional Architecture for the Asia-Pacific Region", providing professional technical training to over 800 heritage conservation practitioners from more than 30 countries and regions. This has built a practical platform for cross-cultural dialogue, supplied core talent for the heritage conservation cause in the Asia-Pacific region, and demonstrated China's responsibility and commitment in international cultural heritage cooperation.

Langzhong, a key town in northern Sichuan, is surrounded by mountains on four sides and water on three. It is a model example of urban site selection embodying the "harmony between humanity and nature" principle, boasting a history of over 2,300 years. As a strategic point in the Ba-Shu region and a crucial land-water thoroughfare on the ancient Shu Roads, its ancient city planning wisdom of adapting to the mountainous and aquatic environment, its unique timber structural system, and its architectural landscape reflecting the coexistence of multiple cultures have completely preserved the street layout pattern from the "Tang-Song structure, Ming-Qing style". It has long been renowned as a "treasure trove of ancient Ba-Shu architecture". Langzhong Ancient City's profound historical heritage, outstanding heritage value, and prominent ancient city conservation cases provide extremely rich material for field study during the course.

Course Content

This year's course, themed "Sustainable Development of Historic Cultural Districts from a Composite Perspective: Conservation Practices of Langzhong Ancient City", aims to leverage Langzhong's outstanding value as a model of living conservation, It will provide a high-level platform integrating theory, practice, and cross-cultural dialogue for in-depth exploration of the conservation, transmission, and sustainable development of historic buildings and districts through field studies discussing Langzhong's Feng Shui city’s wisdom of "integration and interdependence of mountains, water, and city", the profound connotation of Suzhou gardens' "vast universe within a tiny space", and excellent cases of cultural heritage conservation within the Asia-Pacific region.
