WHITR-AP Shanghai Renews MoU with ICCROM to Promote World Heritage Conservation and Development


    On July 8, 2024, during the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris, France, Prof. Shao Yong, Director of WHITR-AP Shanghai and Ms. Aruna Francesca Maria Gujral, Director-General of the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), renews a six-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Ms. Jyoti Hosagrahar, Deputy Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, Mr. Qin Changwei, Secretary-General of the National Commission of the People's Republic of China for UNESCO, and other guests witnessed the signing, marking a new phase in the long-term partnership between the two parties since 2008.

    This six-year MoU aims to deepen the cooperation between the two parties in capacity building, particularly in promoting sustainable heritage conservation and management practices. At the same time, the two parties will also expand areas of collaboration, including World Heritage and sustainable development initiatives.



The renewal of the MoU between WHITR-AP Shanghai and ICCROM


    The long-term collaboration between WHITR-AP Shanghai and ICCROM has produced significant outcomes. One of the important outcomes of the collaboration is the "Guidance and Toolkit for Impact Assessment in a World Heritage Context" compiled by ICCROM etc., based on the international training courses on "Impact Assessment in a World Heritage Context " co-hosted by both parties since 2012. By 2025, WHITR-AP Shanghai completed the Chinese translation of the manual and officially published it. Director Shao Yong presented it to ICCROM to promote its global application. Additionally, the cultural heritage management planning training program conducted between 2008 and 2010 provided significant professional development opportunities for heritage managers in the Asia-Pacific region. The ongoing "World Heritage Contribution to Sustainable Development Goals (2023-2028)" project further demonstrates the firm commitment and innovative efforts of both parties to combine heritage conservation with sustainable development goals.

    At the signing ceremony, the ICCROM Director-General highlighted that the new MoU enables more coordinated and flexible responses in World Heritage conservation. WHITR - AP Shanghai expressed gratitude for ICCROM's sustained commitment and shared vision, and spirit of cooperation, and looks forward to achieving common goals with ICCROM to make a lasting impact in the field of cultural heritage. The renewed MOU not only marks an important milestone in the cooperation between the two parties but also lays a solid foundation for future collaboration in the protection and development of cultural heritage. WHITR-AP Shanghai and ICCROM will continue to work together to promote the sustainable conservation and management of World Heritage and make greater contributions to the global cause of cultural heritage protection.
