  PublishDate:2024-12-12 Hits:141

WHITR‑AP played a key role in advancing World Heritage conservation in the Asia‑Pacific region, particularly during the second and third cycles of periodic reporting. WHITR‑AP Shanghai conducted a thematic study on the State of Conservation (SOC) of World Heritage in the Asia‑Pacific. This study offered in‑depth insights into the evolution of conservation efforts, serving as an essential resource for analyzing the outcomes of the third periodic reporting cycle and shaping regional action plans.

WHITR‑AP Shanghai participated in bi‑weekly online meetings organised by UNESCO's World Heritage Centre Asia‑Pacific Unit since September 2020. These sessions provided support to 44 States Parties and heritage site managers in completing the third periodic reporting cycle. WHITR‑AP also offered training to strengthen regional capacities.

In November 2020, representatives from the Beijing Centre attended the 2020 World Natural Heritage Third Cycle Periodic Reporting Seminar in Kunming, China. This event brought together site managers of national natural heritage sites, mixed cultural and natural heritage sites, and relevant authorities to discuss reporting methodologies. WHITR‑AP Beijing contributed suggestions and participated in discussions on revising the Management Methods for the Protection of World Natural Heritage and Mixed Cultural and Natural Heritage, providing recommendations for policy enhancements.

In 2021, WHITR‑AP Shanghai attended a series of online information and capacity‑building meetings organised by the World Heritage Centre. WHITR‑AP shared perspectives on conservation challenges, urban heritage management, and sustainable development in the Asia‑Pacific region. After submitting initial research data, the Shanghai Centre contributed to drafting the comprehensive report and action plan. These documents were reviewed at the 45th World Heritage Conference in 2022.

Through its active engagement in research, training, and policy development, WHITR‑AP has made substantial contributions to World Heritage conservation in the Asia‑Pacific region.

In 2024, WHITR‑AP Beijing attended the East Asia Consultation Meeting on the Implementation of the Asia‑Pacific Regional Framework Action Plan, which focused on the priority projects outlined in the Asia‑Pacific Regional Framework Action Plan (2023‑2033). With training and research as the main objectives, the Centre co‑organised the East Asia Integrated Heritage Management Capacity Building Workshop with UNESCO. This workshop brought together heritage site managers to share experiences and engage in discussions, thereby fostering enhanced exchange and cooperation on heritage site management in East Asia.

Our efforts have fostered collaboration among stakeholders, supported the formulation of actionable strategies, and enhanced the effectiveness of the third periodic reporting cycle.
