As determined by the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, it is the responsibility of each signatory state to educate the people, especially the young, on the importance of world heritages. It was in accordance with this convention that China set up the annual International Youth Camp on Chinese World Heritage. This activity is sponsored by the Chinese National Federation of UNESCO, and is co-organized by WHITR-AP (Suzhou), the World Heritage Conservation Office of Suzhou, the Suzhou Municipal Administrative Bureau of Gardens, and the Suzhou Education Bureau. The camp will start on July 22, 2008 and will last until August 1 in Suzhou. During this time period, students will learn from World Heritage in Young Hands, a textbook written by UNESCO. Additional activities include Chinese kungfu and traditional Su Embroidery. Camp participants will be able to explore World Heritage Sites such as the classical gardens of Suzhou, the Ancient Villages in Southern Anhui - Xidi and Hongcun, and the Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. They will also visit the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall, as well as the hometown of President Hu Jingtao and surrounding scenery. Furthermore, there will be tours of traditional workshops for paper, ink sticks and slabs, and calligraphy brushes. Participants will discuss themes regarding world heritage protection such as ""World Heritages and Peace,"" ""World Heritages and the Environment,""and ""World Heritages and Tourism."" At the end of this camp, camp counselors will evaluate the participants and award them with ""Patrimonito"" certificates confirming both their efforts over the summer and their pledges for the future.
