The main theme of the day was about: “Values, statements of significance and statements of outstanding universal value”. Mr. King from ICCROM explained the meanings of values, and its evolution in history. The ten criteria for nominating World Heritage properties were discussed thoroughly and special attention was given to the concept of integrity and authenticity in the process of conservation.
The two selected case studies: Qibao ancient town and the Humble Administrator’s Garden in Suzhou were introduced by the resource people. Our MPCH participants began group works and the first assignment was to define the statement of significance for the cases. Group work is an important participatory approach for this course, in order to equip our participants with adequate skills for the implementation of management plan in their countries. The following two days, our participants will visit the two sites, gathering useful information for their future reports.
