From November 7 to 8, 2024, the World Heritage Creative & Innovators Forum and the "Global Awards for World Heritage Education Innovative Cases(AWHEIC)" awards ceremony were held at the Wenlan Pavilion of the Zhejiang Provincial Museum and the Xiling Seal Engravers' Society, both located by West Lake in Hangzhou. The event was jointly organized by our center, the Hangzhou International Urbanology Research Center, and the Zhejiang Provincial Association for the Protection and Utilization of Cultural Relics. Distinguished guests included Ms. Dima AI-Khatib, Director of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation, Mr. Yue DU, Secretary-General of the World Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centres and Associations, members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Vice Chairperson of the Culture, History, and Study Committee and Chairman of the Administrative Committee of the Macau Foundation, Mr. Zhi Liang WU, and Mr. Zehan XIA, Director of the UNESCO Beijing Office (via video). Around 200 attendees, including award recipients and representatives of the 2024 “Global Awards for World Heritage Education Innovative Cases” (AWHEIC), participated in the conference.

Building on the innovative model of "Brainstorming + Immersive Art + Heritage Scenes" from the inaugural 2023 Guangzhou Conference (click for details), the 2024 event was further upgraded. By incorporating a more systematic, full-scenario and full-process integrated design, the essence of the award-winning cases was organically blended with the unique heritage environment of Wenlan Pavilion. The exhibition, marketplace, performances, and forums were seamlessly integrated through spatial and temporal interactions. This created a powerful resonance between the Global Awards for World Heritage Education Innovative Cases(AWHEIC) innovative collaboration network and the historical and cultural heritage of Gu Mountain, innovatively establishing a new model for heritage forums characterized by multi-scenarios, immersive experiences, and full interactivity. The forum was hosted by Dr. Xin LI, Deputy Secretary-General of our center and Chief Curator of the " Global Awards for World Heritage Education Innovative Cases(AWHEIC)" .The event featured an exciting array of activities, including the opening ceremony, joint report releases, strategic cooperation announcements, interactive forums, as well as simultaneous exhibitions and marketplaces. The aim was to establish a platform for innovative resource cooperation, focusing on heritage utilization models, and to foster an interactive atmosphere conducive to in-depth communication and cross-disciplinary collaboration among global world heritage creatives and innovators.

Here, everyone immersed themselves in this co-created, shared, and mutually inspiring creative stage, creating a magnificent symphony of collaboration. Let’s now follow the footsteps of the on-site guests and review the shared highlights together… Conference Venue Strolling through the beautiful courtyard of Wenlan Pavilion, you will first encounter the "Rebirth of Agricultural Heritage" creative market and intangible cultural heritage displays such as Nanyin music. As you continue, you will pass through a historical corridor showcasing award-winning cases from previous years, before finally arriving at the main conference area in front of Wenlan Pavilion. ![]() Group Photo with Guests The opening ceremony was held in the courtyard in front of Wenlan Pavilion. In her speech, Ms. Dima AI-Khatib, Director of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation, emphasized that heritage is not just a tribute to the past, but also about shaping our future. She highlighted that Hangzhou provides a unique example to the world, where natural landscapes and cultural heritage are seamlessly integrated.

Mr. Shanwu JIANG, Director of the Director of Hangzhou International Urbanology Research Center, read a congratulatory letter from Mr.Guoping WANG, Advisor of the Hangzhou International Urbanology Research Center and former Secretary of the Hangzhou Municipal Party Committee. ![]() Group Photo of the Report Release Ms. Dima AI-Khatib, Mr. Lin LI from the UN-Habitat Beijing Office’s Human Settlement Magazine, and Dr. Xin LI,Deputy Secretary-General, World Heritage Institue of Training and Research for the Asia and the Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO, jointly released the report titled "Heritage Conservation in Chinese Cities: Good practices and experiences in the context of South-South Cooperation" .This report brings together 12 innovative heritage protection practices from China, 9 of which are from the 2022 Global Case Award winners, including the West Lake Cultural Ambassador project. The report helps promote the valuable experiences accumulated by Chinese cities in heritage education and protection innovation to the world. Awards Ceremony The Awards Ceremony of Global Awards for World Heritage Education Innovative Cases (AWHEIC) 2024 (please refer to the 2024 Award Announcement link for the list of winners) innovatively adopted an interactive and immersive model. It seamlessly integrated three award presentation segments and four highly artistic innovative case displays (Xiangyunsha fashion show, Western ballet, traditional dance, and Nanyin intangible cultural heritage) with the historical environment of Wenlan Pavilion. This showcased the endless possibilities of heritage scene innovation, becoming the most dazzling highlight of the conference. ![]() Showcase of Innovative Cases
Dr.Xin LI announced the official start of the awards ceremony. Accompanied by the gentle melody of the Dian Shui Nan Yue ensemble, four models dressed in Xiangyunsha garments gracefully walked out from behind the main backdrop of the venue, marking the grand opening of the awards ceremony. At the summit platform, during the "Global World Heritage Creative & Innovators Alliance" Innovation Incubation Project and Strategic Cooperation Release, Dr. Xin LI, along with many partners, jointly launched several innovative cooperation incubation projects, including theSino-Mexican South-South Cooperation Demonstration Project, Creative Music Walking Programme, and Global Youth Volunteer Co-operation. These initiatives aim to drive the strategic transformation of the AWHEIC into an innovation incubator for heritage sites and science-technology models through cross-sector collaboration. ![]() Report Release
On the afternoon of November 7, four sub-forums were held simultaneously at the Xiling Seal Engravers' Society's Huo Pu Jing Lu and the Zhejiang Provincial Museum's Luohan Hall. The sessions were moderated by Ms. Xiaobin ZHANG, Director of the Huotang Project, Mr. Hongxin DU, Deputy Director of Hangzhou International Urbanology Research Centre, and Mr. Kai LUO, Executive Director of Yijie (Beijing) Technology and Education Company. Several representatives from both domestic and international locations delivered speeches at the sub-forums, sharing and exchanging innovative models from their respective cases. Additionally, Ms. Tingting CHEN, the project leader of the Oriental Nishang case, who was based overseas, recorded a special video to participate in the forum, greatly enriching the forum experience. ![]() Roundtable Discussion Session
Building on the case sharing, the roundtable session invited different guests to engage in interactive discussions on four major themes:Creative Inspiring , Youth and the Future, Frontiers of Science and Innovation , and Diffusion of innovations. These discussions further explored the significance and trends of innovation in heritage education. On the morning of November 8, the attendees visited the School of Animation & Games of China Academy of Art, Alibaba Group, and the Hangzhou International Urbanology Research Centre. During these visits, they experienced Hangzhou's dynamic atmosphere of innovation and exploration in science and technology, as well as its research spirit, while reflecting on the broader possibilities of innovative heritage education. ![]() Group Photo at the Research Site
Future Outlook Since its establishment in 2021, the Global Awards for World Heritage Education Innovative Cases(AWHEIC) has built a powerful global innovation cooperation network. This conference, based on this innovative cooperation network and focusing on the innovation of heritage education models, aims to become the birthplace and incubator of innovative models for heritage sites driven by technology and creativity. In the future, we will continue to uphold our mission of promoting the technological and innovative transformation of heritage sites and advance along the path of cross-sector innovation. Our goal remains unchanged: to transform the blueprint of the science and technology innovation development model for heritage sites into reality through collective action.
