| Third International Intangible Cultural Heritage Festival opened on May 29 in Chengdu |

| The Third China Chengdu International Intangible Cultural Heritage Festival, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, the Sichuan Provincial Government and UNESCO, will be held on May 29th –June. 11th held in Chengdu. The Festival is the first comprehensive cultural event that aims to promote the worldwide conservation of intangible cultural heritage of mankind. This year’s festival marks the third one in the history after Sichuan Province was designated as its permanent location. Furthermore, the event also coincides with the declaration of the Law of Intangible Cultural Heritages by the Chinese government, the third anniversary of Wenchuan Earthquake on May12 three years ago and the 6th National Cultural Heritage Day, which makes it more significant. A total of 200 cultural activities of 7 categories will be held during the festival, including: Tianfu Parade, International Intangible Cultural Heritage Expo, Chengdu International Forum on Intangible Cultural Heritage, traditional opera shows, Chinese Guqin Concert, performances out of Chengdu main venue and closing ceremony, etc. The festival will be held in the Chengdu International Cultural Heritage Theme Park. Background Information: Intangible Cultural Heritage includes traditions or living expressions inherited from our ancestors and passed on to our descendants, such as oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals, festive events, etc. International Intangible Cultural Heritage Festival, the only one of its kind in the world, is the first comprehensive cultural event co-sponsored by UNESCO and Chinese government. Chengdu International Intangible Cultural Heritage Festival is among the top 4 national and international cultural fairs approved by the State council, and Chengdu is designated as its permanent location. The first two festivals, held in 2007 and 2009, were respectively with themes of “inherit national culture, bridge human civilization and build harmonious world” and “Varied Ethnic Cultures and Common Spirit Home”. |
